About this Course

At CLU, we believe that every leader, if they are to be effective, must have empathy. Merriam-Webster (2016) defines empathy as: “The action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner.”


What we hope to achieve in creating this curriculum is, of course, to teach empathy at all levels. If I had to describe the basic objectives, then I would say we want students to:

  1. Describe the basic concepts of empathy.
  2. Explore the techniques to become more empathetic.
  3. Demonstrate the application of a technique in becoming more empathetic.
  4. Develop a personal plan to practice empathy every day.
